In the mobile game Hyakumonogatari, on the first anniversary of the game's release, a guaranteed paid SSR ticket was available. Noboru was thrilled. But when he tapped the novel on the screen and the book opened for the summoning animation... it sucked him inside!
Hyakumonogatari's player-character takes on the role of an "Author" and safeguards anthropomorphized fairytales and folktales, which are in danger of being erased by the encroaching darkness -- quite literally, represented by twisted, shadow manifestations of the same stories and their villains.
Although he was a veteran player, with an unbroken login streak from the game's launch date, he was sent to Chapter One, in which the player character comes to the rescue of Little Red Riding Hood. In rescuing Little Red from the shadowy Wolf, he successfully fights off the big bad villain and collects him, as well. This marks the appearance of Noboru's first major power: the author's purification of evil.
He has played the side quest for Shibaemon Tanuki and gained the assistance of the titular character, a fun-loving entertainment junkie and pretty boy who butts heads with the Wolf.
While going through Chapter Two, a tale of Sleepy Hollow, he is pursued by the Headless Horseman. Trapped in a forest of mirrors, he steps through one of them... and ends up in Erku?!
Before he was sucked into the game, Noboru was an ordinary student from modern-day Earth, going to college (beginning senior year, no major declared) and working a part-time job as a barista to hopefully fuel his gacha addiction. His primary circle of friends are fellow internet denizens from r/Hyakumonogatari, along with the odd coworker and classmate.
